S ome of the crowd called upon Alexander, since the Jews had pushed and urged him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make a defense and to apologize to the people.

They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
