A nd one man ran, and, filling a sponge with vinegar (a mixture of sour wine and water), put it on a staff made of a reed and gave it to Him to drink, saying, Hold off! Let us see whether Elijah come to take Him down.

Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”
