T hen forty days were devoted for him, for that is the customary number of days required for those who are embalmed. And the Egyptians wept and bemoaned him for seventy days.

Forty days were needed for this. For this is how much time it took for making the body ready to be buried. And the Egyptians cried for him seventy days.
